Who we are
A coalition, not a commemoration committee.
Belgo Congo Role is an independent international coalition. It works to strengthen the relationship between the Kingdom of Belgium and the Democratic Republic of the Congo through dialogue, innovation, reconciliation and shared prosperity.
Two countries share a history neither of them wrote alone. A hundred and forty years later, that history still weighs on what Belgians and Congolese can build together: universities barely talk, capital moves badly, and memory remains contested ground.

A hundred and forty years, five dates.
The relationship between Belgium and the Congo has a precise chronology, and ruptures nobody disputes. We set it down as it is. What follows is not a trial: it is the necessary starting point for everything the coalition undertakes.
1885
Private property
On 1 July, Leopold II proclaimed the Congo Free State, recognised four months earlier by the Berlin Conference. The territory — 2,345,000 square kilometres, seventy-six times the size of Belgium — did not belong to the Belgian state. It belonged to the king personally, and would for twenty-three years.
A people that transforms its history becomes capable of changing its future.

Two countries,
one shared ground.
Thirty thousand square kilometres on one side, two million three hundred thousand on the other. Thirty-seven provinces in total. The coalition works across both territories, favouring neither.
